Connecting Essay 5

The photograph above is from the internet.  This photograph uses an image within an image to show off exactly what is behind the woman in the photograph. In this photograph they have used a large frame in order to help show off the image that has been placed in the frame. The framing of the photograph is good because the woman isn't in the centre of the frame and is towards one side of the frame in order to keep the tall plant next to her in the fame. The editing matches as the image in the frame and the background together and links the whole photograph together well.

The photograph above is a photograph that I took. In this photograph I used a phone in order to show what was behind the person in my shot and this was very hard due to the fact that the screen was so small and this meant that you don't notice what is wrong with the picture when you first look at it however when you take a closer you can see that what is exactly behind the actor where the phone has been placed.

There are many differences between the photographs. One big difference between the photographs is the difference between the size of the frame and the bigger the frame is the better I think as you can see it more and notice what is wrong in the photograph and it is easier to match up the background picture to the rest of the photograph. Another difference between the pictures is the setting as they are set in different location and I feel that things like this this work better in a more rural location. The only similarity between the two pictures is that the frame reflects what is exactly behind the person that is featured in the photograph.

Connecting Essay 4

In the picture above the photographer has used the pre-visualisation technique to see exactly what the photograph will look like when it has been taken and has spent a lot of time making sure the camera is in the right place in order to get the right effect. The photographer has used the depth of the car door in order to really show off the scene that is being reflected in the mirror.  Also the editing that has been used has made the scene in the window stand out and you can really appreciate the different colours in the scene and the editing has also helped to be able to see exactly what is being reflected in the window.

Above is a photograph that I took. I applied less editing to the window of my car to keep the car seats in the background and therefore keeping it cleat that the window was on the car. I kept the colour in my photograph because I think that it really showed off the season in which the photograph was taken in which was Autumn and I keep the colour in the photograph to help show this off.

The pictures are very similar with the fact that they both reflect scenes in the window of cars. Both pictures have been edited to make the scene in the window stand out and make the scenes in the window very clear. One difference between the pictures is that in my photograph I haven't included the whole of the window in the photograph were as in the top photograph they have included the whole window in order to really show off the whole of the scene.  Also in the top picture you can really clearly see the reflection in the window where as in my own photograph the scene isn't that clear and you can still see the inside of the car.

Connecting Essay 3

This photograph is taken from the Internet, showing the pattern on the floor. I found this photo while looking for inspirational photographs before going out and shooting pattern. This photograph also exhibits the decisive moment because if the photo had been taken at the right moment and if it had been taken at any other time the bike wheel might not have been in the photograph. The leading curved lines show off the calmness of the photograph and the fact that nothing else is happening in the photograph apart from the bike riding through.

Above is a photograph that I took. I decided to keep my image in colour because I felt it worked better due to the moss growing over the square tiles and the little bits of rubbish that have fallen between the cracks. My image used straight lines in order to show the direction of which the tiles are going and the straight lines to show direction. The pattern in my image is as clear as the pattern in the Internet image because it is clear and is the main focus of the whole photograph.

One similarity between my image and the online image is that they are both of pavement tiles that has been used to show off the pattern on the floor. One thing that differs between the two pictures is that in my image the lines created by the tiles are straight however in the Internet image the tiles are curved which suggests different things to the audience. The curved lines in the online photograph suggest calmness and quietness where as the horizontal lines in my photograph represent strength and power. Another difference between the photograph is that in the photograph from the Internet includes a decisive moment with the bicycle going through the middle of the photograph where as in my own photograph there is no decisive moment as the main focus of the photograph is the pattern of the tiles.

Connecting Essay 2

In the picture above it is clear that the photographer has spent a lot of time working on the composition of the photograph and getting the shot exactly right, this is why at the bottom of the picture the road isn't central in the photograph however when you look at the furthest point of the road that can be seen it is in the centre of the photograph. The photographer has really thought about the use of contrasting colours of black and while which works very well and helps to show off the landscape in the snow. The photographer has also used leading lines, on the tyre tracks, to draw you into the photograph.

The image above is my own image and there are some similarities to the first images. I have also used leading lines of type tracks to capture the audience and draw them into the photograph. I had to turn my photograph black and white because it didn't work well in colour and I felt that it worked better in black and white and I was able to change the contest to make the tracks darker. The dark trees in the back contrast the thin layer of snow on the ground  and highlight the weather in the photograph.

The biggest connection between the two images is the use of contrasting colours of black and white to make the path stand out. Another connection is that both the photographs show journey due to the fact that both of them show car tracks going off into the audience. One thing that differs between the picture is that in my own photograph there are many different tracks showing many different journeys where as in the first photograph there is only one clear track giving the sense of a single direction.

Connecting Essay 1

Above is a photo joiner of a room. It is obvious that the photograph is made up of numerous different images and these images have been placed together to show the room however they don't fit together perfectly as they aren't lined up and aren't straight. In this photo joiner a wide-angle lens has been used to give a complete view of the room around the computer. This image has used multiple different images in order to give a different effect and the fact that nothing lines up really gives the idea that the image isn't correct and this works well with this image.

I also chose to do a photo joiner of a room in my image. In my image I have used fewer images however I have used them at more varied angles to give a wider range of photographs and this also shows off the fact that the image doesn't fit together perfectly as there are parts of the image sticking out of the top and bottom. In my image the images are different sizes, which helps to really show off the fact that the images are joined together. My photo joiner was a lot simpler than the other image because I used fewer images and larger images however I feel that my photo joiner works better due to the fact that they match in better and it looks more like the original image.

There are multiple similarities between the pictures the main ones being that they are both photo joiners and are both of rooms. However there is one main difference between the images and that is the size of the photo. In my own photo joiner I used all different sized photographs to get the effect I desired where as in the other photo joiner the images are all this same size and don't fit well together due to colour changes and the fact that lines within the photograph are not lined up well. The lining up of images in my photo joiner appears to be more precise than in the other photos as I have tried to line them up where as in the other one it doesn't line up very well.

Straight Images - 4th Plinth Object

Contact Sheet - 4th Plinth Object

Work Diary - Forth Plinth Object

In preparation for our 4th Plinth project, this week we were tasked with the object we would be placing on the 4th Plinth. Once they were photographed we were tasked with creating image using the images that we had taken. I really enjoyed this task because I like working on photoshop and enjoy learning new techniques and trying to create the perfect image.

Below is an image that I really like

I like this image because it looks realistic while still having a sense of humour about it. I like this image because it took me a while to get right and to make the puddle look realistic. However I really like this image because once I had got the look right it looked very real and as though the bird had always been there. It took me a while to get the reflection in the puddle right but once I did I was happy that I had worked at it and made it look good.

Below is an image that I don't like

Don't like the image because I feel that it is unclear what the animal on the post is. I thought the animal would well due to the fact that it is a similar colour to the sign in the photograph. I think that the image would work better if the animal was bigger and therefore you could actually see what the animal was. I also think the image would work better if I had used the colour version of the image as the image is my own and I could have used the colour version of it.

Progression

The next step is to take photographs of the plinth and other places around London in order to create more images like these. I will also look more at the objects that I have photographs in order to make a clear plan of what I shall photograph during our trip to London.

Cedric Delsaux - Artist Research

Born in 1974
Created a series of images called Dark Lens. Dark Lens photographs introduced characters from George Lucas' Star wars into real life in the suburb of Lille Dubai in Paris. It is said to show how the perception of the city goes through the filter of fiction.
First know for his advertising but is now widely know for his personal long-term series.

I like this photo because the character in the scene fits really will and doesn't look out of place. The compostion of the photograph has been well planned out and I like that the character isn't in the centre of the picture so that it doesn't take over the whole photograph and the background can be appreciated along with the Star Wars character. The picture also works well because the colour of the ruins and the character are very similar and therefore they work really well together as it looks as if the character is part of the ruins.

I like this photograph because it looks like a beautiful landscape however there is something else going on in the distance. I like this because the object is barely visible and the viewer can only just about make out that the object is there. The composition of this shot has been well planned out and the position of the object in the photograph as well. The use of the leading line of the road draws the viewers attention to the object at the back of the picture. I like that the picture looks very basic and ordinary however there is something deeper going on in the background.

Jeff Koons - Artist Research

Jeff Koons
Born - January 21st 1955
Known for - reproductions of banal objects
Educated - School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore.
Has had solo exhibitions since 1980
His most famous statue was shown at the Rockefella Centre and is now permanently in the Guggenheim Bilbao.

I like this photograph as I think that the manipulation of the ballon dog works well and even though it does fit in with the location it still works well. I like that the manipulation looks realistic and therefore the photograph works really well. The use of the metallic effect on the ballon dog works well because if it was see through it wouldn't work as well as this does. I really like the look of the photograph and think that it works well because it looks like it belongs in the location that it is in.

I like this image because the composition of the image as one of the animals is looking towards that camera and the other one isn't. I like the connotations that go along with the picture, suggesting that the these animals are trapped in cages and so therefore and being held captive. I like the background of the image has been left plain to really highlight the connotations of the piece. I also think that the fact that the only bright colours in the photograph are the animals because it makes them stand out and therefore draws the viewers attention to them right away.

I like this image because it shows high levels of contrast because the main subject of the photograph is the hulk and then there are multiple blown up animals on it. The contrast is that the animals on the hulk are happy whereas the hulk looks angry. Again the composition of the photograph is well done and the hulk is in the centre of the photograph even though the piece is at an angle. I like that the photos composition has well planned out and pre-visuialistaion has been used in order to really show off the whole of the statue.

Straight Images - Landscape Photography Snow

Contact Sheet - Landscape Photography Snow

Work Diary - Landscape Photography Snow

On Sunday morning when I woke up there was a sprinkling of snow and I decided that this would be the perfect time to take landscape photos as the snow wouldn't last forever. My mum drove me around for around for about an hour going to different yet local places so I could find the best landscapes to take photos of. The aperture of the photograph has effected the depth of field in the image below I have used a high aperture in order to create a wide depth of field as this has worked better in a landscape photographs.

Below is a photo that I like

I like the composition of the photo. I like you can see the road clearly and then in the distance you can see the town. I like the editing in the photo and I think that the photograph worked well in black and white. I played around with the colour channels to get the desired effect and then I played around with the level to get a complete contrast. I like the road in the picture because I feel like the tyre marks show that life continues even in the differing weather conditions.

Below is a photo that I don't like

I don't like this photograph because I feel like it shows off the landscape very well and the colours are very plain and bland. I feel like this is one of the weakest photographs that I took and I feel like it doesn't really show off the landscape even through you can see into the distance. I also don't like the framing as I feel that the branch should have been further to the left of the shot.

Progression

I would like to take landscapes in a variety of weather setting to use different camera techniques and to help improve my landscape photography skills. I also want to take photos of the landscape in London to get some urban landscape photographs. I would also like to experiment with different aperture settings to see the difference in landscape.

Straight Images - Landscape Photography Harlow

Contact Sheet - Landscape Photography Harlow

I shared the camera Chloe so some pictures may be the same.

Work Diary - Landscape Photography Harlow

For  todays lesson we were tasked with going out and taking landscape photographs. I found this really hard as I didn't really like the sort of landscapes that could be taken in Harlow. I also struggled to take the photographs because it was really cold outside and i struggled to stand still and take the photographs because I couldn't feel my hands. Due to the bad weather I was unable to take lots of photographs but I was able to work with the ones that I had and create some good landscape photographs. I tried to make the image more vibrant in photoshop however this didn't work and I ended up turning the images black and white because I felt that they worked better like this than they did in colour.

Below is one photo from the shoot that I like
Camera Settings - 1/30 sec f/8 ISO 200

I like this landscape because it works really well in black and white. I like the framing of this photograph because you can see all the tops of the buildings and it gives a clear idea that the landscape is in a built up area and you can see that there is still some natural life in this built up area. I played around with the different colour channels in photoshop in order to get the desired effect within the photograph. I also like this photograph because I like the composition of it as it feature equal amounts of the road, buildings and the sky.

I don't like this photograph as I feel like it as weak photograph and the composition of the photograph is bad. I don't like that the whole building is in the photograph and therefore I feel as though the composition is bad. I also feel like there is too much of the carpark in the photograph and therefore doesn't really show off the landscape that I was trying to photograph.

Progression

I would like to go out an shoot more rural landscapes so I will find time to do that outside of collage and then I would also like to take landscape photographs while on our trip to London in order to show a really urban landscape. I would also like to look at ways to show off the landscapes in colour however I feel like it really works in Black and White. On the trip to London I would like to take landscape photographs in the dark to really show off the different lights in the sky in London.
