Work Diary - Studio Shape
In Tuesdays afternoon lesson we were asked to bring in something to take shape photos of in the studio. So in todays lesson I took the photos in the studio. i was originally going to take photos of a ring however this developed into trying to find different ways in which to photograph the rings and other things that came with the ring.
Below is one photo from the shoot that I liked.
Camera Settings - 1/80 sec f/5.6 ISO 100

I like this photo because it really shows off the shape of the bow and all the different curves and and shape of the bow ears. I like this photo because it really shows off the shape of the knot in the middle of the bow. I like this photo because the shadow adds to the shape of the bow and makes the shape appear 3D even though the picture is 2D.
Below is a photo from the shoot that I don't like.
I dont like this photo because the actual shape is not in focus or completely in the frame of the photo. I really liked the photo but i can not use it because it is out of focus and the shape that I was trying to photograph isn't completely in the shot. I also don't think that this angle really did show off the shape of the ring very well.
Progression
If I was to go in the studio and snooty shape again I would try to photograph bigger shapes as the shapes I have taken in very small. I would also try to take photographs containing multiple different shapes and different depths. I would also experiment with changing angle the lighting and changing the height of the lighting to try and show off the shape more.

Work Diary - Shape
In todays lesson we were tasked with shooting shape. I found this easy to understand as it was explained in detail and it was easy to come up with ideas of what to photograph. I found that this was one of the easier topics and I was able to instantly see all the different shapes and how to photograph them. For this shoot I experimented with my camera and tried it in manual focus as a way in which to get a better focus that showed off the shape more.
Below is a photo from the shoot that I like
Camera Settings - 1/400 sec f/11 ISO 400

I like this photo because there is a lot going on yet the shape of the cone is the main focus of the picture, the shape of the cone and the colour of it really stands out against the busy background. The shape of the cone is clear and well formed and this means that the main focus of the photo remains the main focus of the photo and allows the shape of the cone to be seen
Below is a photo from the shoot that I didn't like
I don't like this photo that much because it doesn't show of the true shape of the photo. The photo is of the inside of a pyramid but this photo doesn't show off the actual shape of the ceiling, I don't think this photo would work because it doesn't really show off the 3D nature of the subject.
Progression
If I was to go out and shot shape again I would go into a more built up area and try to take the different shapes of buildings and the different shapes created by the building. I would also look at different sized objects as I didn't photograph small objects so this is something that i would like to take as well as shoot in the studio.
Image Bank- Shape
This image uses negative semantic space to really highlight the different objects and the different shapes of each of them. The fact that all the objects are white really shows their shape off against the black background. The objects have been well placed because none of them are touching but they all feature enough in the photograph for the person to understand exactly what is in the photo. Most photos use the dark as a way in which to really show off the shape of the object however this photo is the other way round.
The black and white in this photo really shows off the different shapes of every finger and by using a lighter background it makes the fingers stand out because they are darker than the background. the darker shading on the underside of the fingers allows the fingers to have a 3D shape rather than just looking 2D and the darker shades also adds different tones to the photos.
This shape is naturally occurring and the depth used within the photo show off the pattern of the shape. The use off a different colour in the background makes the bleeding hearts stand out and really helps to show off the shape. The blurry background also helps the hear shape stand out because the shape in clear. The shape is extremely clear and this really helps to show off the shape and all of the tiny details on the shape.
In this photo the background is in colour and negative semantic space has been used to show the outline of the shape well. The background has been blurred to really show of the shape within the photo. I like this photo because it is just the outline of the shape rather than having it shaded in, I think this allows the background to be brought into the photograph and means that the whole photo is incorporated into the photo.
I like this photo because it visualises what exactly what each body type look like. It uses the shape of each object that each body type is named after to. This uses the idea of visualisation as a way to show exactly what it means. I like this photo because shape is well uses and really highlights exactly what the photo is trying to show.
I like this photo because it uses both tone and shape to show of the different shape of the starfish. the different shades of blue really made the starfish standout. The contrast in shape really makes that starfish standout. The placement of the starfish means that it is in the centre of attention in the photograph.
Definition Post- Shape
Definition- a shape is an area enclosed by a line. It could be just an outline or it could or it could be shaded in. It could be geometric or irregular. Shapes created in the space between shapes are referred to as negative space.

This image use geometric shapes in order to show shape it allows you to see the shape. The photo also shows of a geometric shape you the top of the building to show off a shape in the sky. This picture uses either squares or rectangles in order to to show of shape the best.
This images uses the spiral of the stair case as a way to show of the shape of the stair case the angle of the photo really shows off the shape of the object that you wouldn't normally focus on and wouldn't normally look at . It uses as man-made geometric shape.
This photo uses multiple geometric shape to show off the shape of the poles it also uses the different lengths of the poles. The poles use black in the middle of them to add depth to the photo and really show of the shape of the pole as part of it is in the dark.
This photo uses shadows as a way in which to show off the shape of the animal. It also uses the natural base of a leaf to keep the theme of nature running through opt he whole photograph. The photo uses the shadow really well because even though you can't see what the animal is you know what the animal is, even with the lack of colour.
Personal Defintion - the outline of a object, either geometric or irregular, that is joined at both ends

Is
this art or sexual objectification?
Brand
is associated with representing the body as a landscape or an abstract geometric form. Working
often with the female form, he is also creating images within a sexualised
context in much the same was as a classical sculptor portrays a nude. The picture could be considered as both art and as sexual objectification. I think that it could be considered as art because it has been constructed to show exactly what needs to be shown and has been heavily edited to create the exact feeling that Bill Brandt wished to portray. However it could also be considered as sexual objectification as it is just of the womans legs and doesn't show her face or anything that would give her meaning as far as the viewer is concerned the woman in the photo is just a pair of legs and the fact the nothing else of the shown suggests that she doesn't matter and is just another object in the photograph. it can be interpreted in either way, I look at the photo as a piece of art because I am a photography student and this is how every photo must be looked at however if someone with no knowledge of art or photograph looked at this photo they may look at it as the women has been sexually objectified. The image uses negative semantic space at the top right hand corner of the photo and i feel that this has been used to really show of the light tone of skin on her knee just below it. The different tones in this photo really makes the legs stand out and this may also contribute to a person feeling that in this image the woman is being sexually objectified.
