Work Diary - London Trip

On the 26th of January as a class we went to some photography exhibitions in the science museum before heading to Trafalgar Square to take more photographs. However before we were due to meet I decided to go to Camden Market and take some photographs around Camden Market and take some extra photos to help me with the project.

Below is a photograph I created

Background Image Camera Settings - 1/320 sec f/3.5 ISO 3200

I have manipulated a boot that can be found on a building in Camden Market to look as though it is balanced on the top of a post in Trafalgar Square. I like the manipulation involved in the creation of the image and I like the way it turned out. To get the post in focus and the background blurred I used a Prime lens to get the blurred at the back and the front in focus. I enjoyed working with this different lens as it allowed me to try out new techniques which I couldn't do with the original lens on my camera.

Below is a photo I don't like

Camera Settings - 0.3 Seconds, f/5.6 ISO 800

I don't like this photo as it is very blurred and the background of the picture is blurred. I had the shutter speed set for too long and therefore it meant that it captured some of the movement that was going on in the photograph. I don't like this image because as it has blurred it is now cannot be fixed and therefore means that it cannot be used. I also don't like that all the colours have blurred and therefore it doesn't look as clear as it would have done if it had been on a lower shutter speed.

Work Diary - Forth Plinth Object

In preparation for our 4th Plinth project, this week we were tasked with the object we would be placing on the 4th Plinth. Once they were photographed we were tasked with creating image using the images that we had taken. I really enjoyed this task because I like working on photoshop and enjoy learning new techniques and trying to create the perfect image.

Below is an image that I really like

I like this image because it looks realistic while still having a sense of humour about it. I like this image because it took me a while to get right and to make the puddle look realistic. However I really like this image because once I had got the look right it looked very real and as though the bird had always been there. It took me a while to get the reflection in the puddle right but once I did I was happy that I had worked at it and made it look good.

Below is an image that I don't like

Don't like the image because I feel that it is unclear what the animal on the post is. I thought the animal would well due to the fact that it is a similar colour to the sign in the photograph. I think that the image would work better if the animal was bigger and therefore you could actually see what the animal was. I also think the image would work better if I had used the colour version of the image as the image is my own and I could have used the colour version of it.

Progression

The next step is to take photographs of the plinth and other places around London in order to create more images like these. I will also look more at the objects that I have photographs in order to make a clear plan of what I shall photograph during our trip to London.

Work Diary - Landscape Photography Snow

On Sunday morning when I woke up there was a sprinkling of snow and I decided that this would be the perfect time to take landscape photos as the snow wouldn't last forever. My mum drove me around for around for about an hour going to different yet local places so I could find the best landscapes to take photos of. The aperture of the photograph has effected the depth of field in the image below I have used a high aperture in order to create a wide depth of field as this has worked better in a landscape photographs.

Below is a photo that I like

I like the composition of the photo. I like you can see the road clearly and then in the distance you can see the town. I like the editing in the photo and I think that the photograph worked well in black and white. I played around with the colour channels to get the desired effect and then I played around with the level to get a complete contrast. I like the road in the picture because I feel like the tyre marks show that life continues even in the differing weather conditions.

Below is a photo that I don't like

I don't like this photograph because I feel like it shows off the landscape very well and the colours are very plain and bland. I feel like this is one of the weakest photographs that I took and I feel like it doesn't really show off the landscape even through you can see into the distance. I also don't like the framing as I feel that the branch should have been further to the left of the shot.

Progression

I would like to take landscapes in a variety of weather setting to use different camera techniques and to help improve my landscape photography skills. I also want to take photos of the landscape in London to get some urban landscape photographs. I would also like to experiment with different aperture settings to see the difference in landscape.

Work Diary - Landscape Photography Harlow

For  todays lesson we were tasked with going out and taking landscape photographs. I found this really hard as I didn't really like the sort of landscapes that could be taken in Harlow. I also struggled to take the photographs because it was really cold outside and i struggled to stand still and take the photographs because I couldn't feel my hands. Due to the bad weather I was unable to take lots of photographs but I was able to work with the ones that I had and create some good landscape photographs. I tried to make the image more vibrant in photoshop however this didn't work and I ended up turning the images black and white because I felt that they worked better like this than they did in colour.

Below is one photo from the shoot that I like
Camera Settings - 1/30 sec f/8 ISO 200

I like this landscape because it works really well in black and white. I like the framing of this photograph because you can see all the tops of the buildings and it gives a clear idea that the landscape is in a built up area and you can see that there is still some natural life in this built up area. I played around with the different colour channels in photoshop in order to get the desired effect within the photograph. I also like this photograph because I like the composition of it as it feature equal amounts of the road, buildings and the sky.

I don't like this photograph as I feel like it as weak photograph and the composition of the photograph is bad. I don't like that the whole building is in the photograph and therefore I feel as though the composition is bad. I also feel like there is too much of the carpark in the photograph and therefore doesn't really show off the landscape that I was trying to photograph.

Progression

I would like to go out an shoot more rural landscapes so I will find time to do that outside of collage and then I would also like to take landscape photographs while on our trip to London in order to show a really urban landscape. I would also like to look at ways to show off the landscapes in colour however I feel like it really works in Black and White. On the trip to London I would like to take landscape photographs in the dark to really show off the different lights in the sky in London.

Work Diary - Composite Images

This lesson we learnt  a technique of how to manipulate photos to create something that isn't real. Originally I struggled with coming up with ideas of what to manipulate however once I created one I got the idea I was able to create them freely. I like creating this as I enjoy using Photoshop and seeing what I can come up with. I only created 5 images so below is one of the images that I created that I liked.

I really like this creation as it works well together and both components link well together. I like that it looks real even though it is clearly fake. I took a while to get the size of the person right but I like how it ended up looking. I think this works well and really shows off the idea of photo manipulation and how it can work well together.  This is favourite creation because I spent a lot of time on it and I feel like it works really well together.

Progression

I would like to create more photo manipulations but using my own photographs as I feel it is hard to create manipulations when you don't really know the photo and when you have to spend a lot of time looking for the photo which you want. I would also like to create more complex manipulation with more parts.

Work Diary - Photo Documentary

Throughout the Christmas Holiday I worked on my Photo Documentary. Documenting which top I wore on each day and something that  I did on each day. I found this project really hard to keep up with because somedays I would simply forget that I needed to take a picture and then I would have to be reminded. Apart from that I really enjoyed the project.

I created 2 different editing techniques one where the photograph of the top and the day are next to each other and one where the day is inside the shape of the top from that day. I liked both these edits as I feel like they work really well together. I like that they showed continuity throughout the set and that they all linked well together.

The set of photographs I took and the edits I created really documented my christmas break in a way that I really wanted to and was able to feel like the the person look at the photographs as a complete set and really understand what I did over the Christmas Holiday and really feel a part of it.

I did create another set of photo where I only got rid of half of the top and then filled it in with the other picture of the day however this set was very hard to create and didn't quite work in the way I wanted it to. I didn't like it because you couldn't see enough of the day to really see what I did on that day and I feel like the set where I had got rid of all the top and placed the other photo in its place  worked better and clearly linked the photos together.

To create the images where the day appears in the shape of the shirt I highlighted around the shirt leaving just the hanger then I rubbed out the shirt leaving a clear space before inserting the photograph of the day and placing in behind the shirt meaning that it looked like the day was in side the shape of the shirt from that day.

Below is a  that I created that I really like.

I like this photo because the composition of the day photo works really well in the shape of the T-Shirt. I like that you still see enough of the image to understand what I did on that day. I also like that the colour is vibrant and really stands out. The picture inside the top turned out really well considering I took it on my iPhone. I really like this editing technique and it looks really difficult it was actually very simple. The technique is very simple just selecting the whole top then rubbing it out before dragging the  other photo on to the picture and moving it to the background.

Below is a photo that I created that I feel is the weakest from my set.

I feel like this photo is my weakest because On Day 15 i decided to wait and take a photo while I was at my friends birthday party however I didn't realise how dark the hall was going to be and therefore I feel like this is the weakest photo in my set as you can't tell exactly what is happening in the photograph or what I did that day. I don't feel like you can clearly see what is in the photograph and this is means that the photo doesn't fit perfectly in the set, it fits in the set but not well as the picture isn't perfectly clear.

Work Diary - Texture

In todays lesson we where continuing to work on our Unit 1 blogs and I decided that I was going to reshoot texture. I decided to reshoot this formal element because I was ill at the time that this was shoot at college, I also felt that texture was my weakest of the formal elements and I felt that now having studied all of the formal element I was in a better place in which to take more texture photos.

Below is a photo from the shoot that I like.
Camera Settings- 1/15 sec f/4.5 ISO 3200

I like this photo because there are multiple different textures shown within the picture and it clearly showed off the texture on the beanbag. I like the photo as it is edited and turned in to black and white. The black and white shows off the different texture due to the different tones featured in the photo.

Below is a photo from the shoot that I don't like

I don't like this photo because it doesn't show off the texture that was actually there at the time I also don't like the fact that the background is different colours I fell like this photo would have worked better if I hadn't have been standing on a table in order to take this photo.

Progression

If I were to go out and re do this shoot I would like to do this shoot then it isn't raining as I would like to shoot this outside because I don't have that many photos from outside.

Work Diary - Mulitple Imagery

I really liked this type of photography and really wanted to try it, I started off by working in the studio on images for these photos and then I edited it when I was at home having really liked how they came out I decided to continue to shoot images for this in Thursdays afternoon lesson. I spent a lot of time editing these photos and picking exactly which photos I wanted to included in the multiple imagery image.

Below is an Image that I created that I like

I really like this image that I created because I feel like all the images work really well together. The images work really well together and I like how simple the images are and how the simple use of a prop can influence the photos. I like the photos are posed and that my model really used the hat as a influxes on her facial expressions. I like that I only left a small gap in-between the photos because I feel that they are all different and are a set however they aren't the same photo they needed a little gap in the middle of them to show off the difference between the photos.

Below is an image that I created that I don't really like

I don't like this photo because the change between table and white backdrop is not straight and is at a different heights in every photo. I don't like that the photos are from a different angle and I don't like the fact the photos are taken at different heights as they show different parts of the shoes. I like the idea of the photo but it just wasn't executed well and I think I could have used a tripod to make these photos better.

Progression

If I were to reshoot multiple imagery I would shot multiple different people in the studio all with the same facial expression. I would also like to shoot outside and try to make something like a flower or a plant out of the different images. I would also like to look at larger multiple imagery with more than 9 images in them.

Work Diary - Portraiture Location

I missed the lesson on Thursday afternoon however I was told that the lesson was to do with taking portraiture outside. For this shoot I decided to take photos of my Grandad because he has a very interesting face because of the wrinkles and creases in his face. I feel like he made an interesting subject because I took a younger person in the studio I wanted to contrast this with someone from an older generation to see the different ways in which they could be photographed and if they are different in anyway. I also decided to try and use some different and interesting editing techniques to make the photos look even more interesting.  The editing techniques that I used were very simple however I used them in a interesting way to make the portrait look interesting. I changed some of the photos or bits of the photo to black and white to helps show the age of my Grandad and show that when he was first born he would have been photographed in black and white but now he can be photographed in colour.

Below is an edited photo from the shoot that I like
Camera Settings - 1/125 sec f/4.0 ISO 320

 Camera Settings - 1/125 f/4.0 ISO 280
I like this photo because the editing worked really well and I enjoyed spending the time making the split in the photo as equal as I could I also really like the photo I feel like it was taken at a good angle and the expression on his face is very natural and not forced making him seem more relaxed in the photo and I like this look because I personally do not like photos that are being posed for and I feel like the editing works well with the photograph.

Below is a photo from the shoot that I don’t like

Camera Settings - 1/80 sec, f/4.5 ISO 400

I don’t like this photo because it is not a portrait photo as it is taken landscape. I also am not happy with a the framing as I think the background looks rather flat and all one colour I prefer the photos where the shed if featured in the background as I feel that the shed gives the photo some depth and really helps add to the colour of the photo. I also don’t like this photo because I had decided to use the flash on my Grandad and it blinded him causing him to make a strange face which I do not like.

Progression

If I were to go out and reshoot portraiture outside I would like to have someone who is old and someone who is young together in order to make a really interesting portrait to show the difference between the ages of the subjects and look at different editing techniques for the photos. I would like to learn more editing techniques so I can continue to improve my photos.

Work Diary - Portraiture

In the morning lesson we were tasked with take portraits of other people within the class and looking at different photographers that take portraiture photos. I enjoyed look at the photos and different ways in which the portraits were taken. When I went in the studio and took the photos I found this part fun however it was hard at first to get the model to show the right emotion as I wasn't exactly sure what look I was going for so I struggled with this bit to begin with however after a while i got the hang of it and managed to get the look I was going for.

Below is a photo from the shoot that I like
Camera Settings - 1/125 sec f/8 ISO 200

I like this photo because it is a really simple portrait and I edited the photo to help show the emotion in the photograph and shows the sadness in the person and the photograph. I like the position of the lighting and the simple nature of of the photograph. I like the dark tones of the photo as it add to the emotion of the photo.

Below is a photo from the shoot that I don't like

I don't like this photo because it isn't straight on. I don't feel like this is a strong photo because I feel like it shows depth rather than portraiture. I think that this photo would have looked better if it was straight on and I feel like this is a weak image and it could be made stronger if I took it from straight on and made her look up rather than lowering myself.

Progression

If I were to go and reshoot portraiture I would like to do it with a range of people with different backgrounds to get used to taking group photos and getting the right background for certain people. I would like to also try taking portraiture at different angles and heights in order to get the best photographs.

Work Diary - Photojoiner

Below is a photo from the shoot that I do like
This week we were tasked with creating photojoiners. On Tuesday we were tasked with photographing small ones of people in the studio  and of small things outside and then on Thursday we were tasked with creating a landscape joiner however due to the rain we had to do this inside. I found this easier than expected because the editing process was a lot simpler than I had imagined it would be considering how complex they look.

Below is a photo joiner from the lesson that I like

I like this photo joiner because it was hard to make it look like a complete plant. I like that this photo has a gap in the photo and that one of the photos sticks out at the top making it clear that it is a photo joiner. I like this joiner because even though photos were quick and simple to take but the amount of time I spend resizing the images and making them look like a plant was well done by the way that the picture now looks.

Below is a photo from the shoot that I don't like

I don't like photo because I don't feel that it works well I don't like the fact there is so little to photograph yet it doesn't line up and the doesn't look good. I don't like it because nothing really lined up well or really fitted together meaning that it didn't work that well. I also don't like this photo because half way through someone walked down the corridor meaning I had to move out they way and lost my position meaning that I had guess where I was standing in order to take the photographs.

Progression

If I was to create more photo joiners I would like to have go at faces again because I feel that these were my weakest photo joiners and I would like another chance to create these. I would look at photo joiners of faces before taking the pictures to understand exactly how they work and take similar photos. I would also like to do a bigger photo joiner with a lot more photos in it to see how hard or easy they are
