Work Diary - Depth 2
In todays lesson we were asked to again go out and shot depth again. I enjoyed this because the weather was very different and I knew I would be able to manipulate the colours in the sky to make the different colours more visible. I also enjoyed it more because i already have an understanding of depth so was able to look at things and really see if the contained depth.
Below is a photo from the shoot that I do like
Below is a photo from the shoot that I do like
I like this photo because it really it really shows depth but in a very different way because it is the distance between someones feet and their head. I like this because you can't really see where his head ends so it gives a vanishing point and really draws the viewer in and give them a leading line to follow and really keep their interest.
Below is a photo from the shoot that I don't like
Originally I really liked this photos however when I revisited it I didn't like it. I don't feel that the depth in the photo is very clear and you can't see the different colours. I think that this would have been better from a different angle and if the cone had a light at the end of it because it isn't very obvious that there is an empty space at the end on the cone
Progression
If I were to go out and shoot depth again I would focus on other angles and different lighting. I would also look at different editing technique to really help the depth shine and really show off the angle at which the photo has been taken. I would like to learn more editing techniques to really help improve my photos and make them really stand out.

Work Diary - Depth
In todays lesson we were tasked with photographing depth both in the studio and outside on location. This task was made easier by the fact that before we went out and shot we learned about aperture priority mode which really made the task easier. Without this information I feel this task would have been much hard and the photos wouldn't have been as good as I feel they are. I don't think that I would have been able to capture depth very well without the knowledge of aperture.
Below is a photo from the shoot that I do like
Camera Setting - 1/125 sec f/5.6 ISO 200
Camera Setting - 1/125 sec f/5.6 ISO 200
I like this photo because her hand and the camera lens are in focus but the girl holding it is not which really shows the distance between her hand and her face. I also like it because even though she isn't in focus she isn't too blurred that it can not be determined as to what is is. The blur is very subtle yet you know that it she is blurred and that the camera lens is in focus. I like this photo because the depth is very clear and well shown.
Below is a photo from the shoot that I don't like
I don't like this photo because I lost the rest of the path which was what I was trying to capture to show depth. I think it would show depth better if more of the stepping stones could be seen because the depth would have followed the path through the photograph. I also think this photo could look better ing the background was a little bit out of focus.
Progression
If I were to go out and shoot depth again I would try to use the tripod because I feel I would be able to look at the focal point of the photo and have a look at the different f stops and shutter speed. I would also try to go to a different location and find different ways in which to show depth. I would also like to spend more time in the studio perfecting depth in the studio. I would also like to take more photos containing people
Image Bank - Depth
f/3.5
This photo shows a very shallow depth of field because the front ball is in focus however the rest of the photo is out of focus however it is still easy to see what the background is as it is still quite clear and can be easily defined as it is a well known location and the only location you would really find the subject of the photo. I like this photo because the line of balls that get less and less in focus really shows the depth of the photo and that a small depth of field has been used.
f/4
I like this photo because the bulb closest to the camera isn't in focus yet the next one along is in focus and is the only photo in focus. I like that the bulbs become less and less in focus as they go along the line. I like the different colours used in the and how much the bulbs in the back ground aren't in focus year still show that they are shining
f/20
I like this photo because there is a clear depth with a clear vanishing point leading the main point of the photograph. This shows depth well and really highlights the depth of the photo. The vanishing point adds to the depth of the photo and the use of a white light as the point of depth to really give the idea that the stair case is on going.
f/16
I like this photo because the boat is clear yet the background and the pebbles in the foreground are both out of focus. I like that the pebbles in the foreground are blurred because the really shows the distance between the boat and the camera and that the focus point of the photo has been changed as the camera focus would have probably been on those pebbles and I like the fact that they aren't.
f/7
I like this photo because the teddy bear is in focus and the background is so blurry that it is nearly impossible to tell exactly what the background but you can guess that the background is somewhere you would find a child. I like this photo because there are very few colours that are clear and they are all very similar in their shades.
f/5.6
I like this photo because the photo the foreground is in focus and the rest of the picture is very blurry. I like that the front flower is really clear and you can see all the little details on the middle of the flowers yet you can barely separate the flowers in the background. I like how blurry the background is and how the background contrasts the front flowers.

Shallow depth of field
Aperture - F/2.8
This is a shallow depth of field because the amount of photo in focus is very small and a lot of the photo is blurred. The photographer has kept the the focus point of the mushrooms at the front to keep the focus on the mushrooms.
Wide Depth of Field
Aperture - F/16
This is a wide depth of field because a lot of the photo is in focus to really show the depth of the corridor. The wide depth has been used to show of the depth and show off the detail.
This uses a shallow depth of field because the key focus of the picture is in focus and really showing the most important part of the picture and everything else is blurred.
This photo uses a wide depth of field meaning that all of the photo is in focus and the main focus of the photo really shows the direction of the road and it has a vanishing point as you cannot see the end of the road.
Personal definition - Depth is the difference between the front and the back of a picture which allows it to appear smaller.
