Work Diary - Photo Documentary
Throughout the Christmas Holiday I worked on my Photo Documentary. Documenting which top I wore on each day and something that I did on each day. I found this project really hard to keep up with because somedays I would simply forget that I needed to take a picture and then I would have to be reminded. Apart from that I really enjoyed the project.
I created 2 different editing techniques one where the photograph of the top and the day are next to each other and one where the day is inside the shape of the top from that day. I liked both these edits as I feel like they work really well together. I like that they showed continuity throughout the set and that they all linked well together.
The set of photographs I took and the edits I created really documented my christmas break in a way that I really wanted to and was able to feel like the the person look at the photographs as a complete set and really understand what I did over the Christmas Holiday and really feel a part of it.
I did create another set of photo where I only got rid of half of the top and then filled it in with the other picture of the day however this set was very hard to create and didn't quite work in the way I wanted it to. I didn't like it because you couldn't see enough of the day to really see what I did on that day and I feel like the set where I had got rid of all the top and placed the other photo in its place worked better and clearly linked the photos together.
To create the images where the day appears in the shape of the shirt I highlighted around the shirt leaving just the hanger then I rubbed out the shirt leaving a clear space before inserting the photograph of the day and placing in behind the shirt meaning that it looked like the day was in side the shape of the shirt from that day.
Below is a that I created that I really like.

I like this photo because the composition of the day photo works really well in the shape of the T-Shirt. I like that you still see enough of the image to understand what I did on that day. I also like that the colour is vibrant and really stands out. The picture inside the top turned out really well considering I took it on my iPhone. I really like this editing technique and it looks really difficult it was actually very simple. The technique is very simple just selecting the whole top then rubbing it out before dragging the other photo on to the picture and moving it to the background.
Below is a photo that I created that I feel is the weakest from my set.
I feel like this photo is my weakest because On Day 15 i decided to wait and take a photo while I was at my friends birthday party however I didn't realise how dark the hall was going to be and therefore I feel like this is the weakest photo in my set as you can't tell exactly what is happening in the photograph or what I did that day. I don't feel like you can clearly see what is in the photograph and this is means that the photo doesn't fit perfectly in the set, it fits in the set but not well as the picture isn't perfectly clear.
Comparison Henri Cartier-Bresson and Sally Mann - Artist Research
Both Henri Cartier-Bresson and Sally Mann take photos that show a clear story with the background being blurred. I like this style of photography however there is a difference in the stories that they tell.
Henri Cartier-Bresson tends to show the relationship between people who don't spend very long together and only see each other in passing where as Sally Mann takes photos that appear to be family member and shows a clear and strong bond between the people in her photographs. Personally I like both styles of photography however I probably prefer the style of Henri Cartier-Bresson because I like the idea of taking a photo and giving the viewer multiple different possibilities of their relationship. I like knowing that there is some kind of relationship between them but I like leaving the opinion on the relationship up to the viewer of the photograph.
Both these photographers take their photographs in black and white. I don't always like this style of photography but it works really well in all the photographs that I have analysed. The black and white effect gives the photographs a sense of innocence and really highlights the relationship between the people in the photographs as their relationship is the focus of the photograph and not the different colours that actually feature in the photograph. The lack of colour keeps the photograph natural and keeps the focus on the relationship.
There are many similarities and differences between these photographers and I like both their styles and I feel like the different styles really suit their own type of photography. I like both different styles and feel like they really work for the different photographers.

Sally Mann - Artist Research
Sally Mann (born 1951) is an American photographer, best known for her large black-and-white photographs—at first of her young children, then later of landscapes suggesting decay and death. She has received many awards for her work and is one of the most well known photographers in America.
Below are three of her photos that I have analysed.

I like this photo because it is a very natural and it clearly shows the relationship between two sister and how the younger one looks up to the older one and how the older one wants to look after the younger one. I like this photo because it also shows a decisive moment because if the photo had been taken any later they may have looked different and the photograph wouldn't have looked the same. I like that the picture also sort of predicts the future were girls will get messy with their beauty products when they are getting ready, I like this because it is like the young children are role playing and pretending to be adults .
I like this photo because they are not looking at the camera they are looking at the fire in the background. I like that the background is blurred but you can still what they are looking at. I like that they are not looking at the camera and this is the style of photography that I like as I don't really like posed photographs. I like that the photo is more sepia than black and white as I like the extra shade of colour included in the photograph.
I like this photo because the story is very clear and again I like that you can see the relationship between the two boys and from the picture you can tell a lot about the relationship from the photo even though it is a black and white photograph. I like that even though you can tell they don't get on they are still holding hands showing that they do like each other and even love each other.
Image Bank - Photo Documentary
In this photo-documentary the person has documented the life of a farmer and his animals. I feel that this documentary works well and really helps to show off his life and what he does on a regular basis. I feel that the black and white keeps the photographs simple and clean. I feel that this really shows off his life and really documents the way in which he lives his life and the simplistic way in which he leads his life. I think the fact that there are multiple images in this set also shows a lot of his life and things that he does. There is a common theme through out the images that is the man and a goat in the image somewhere.
In this documentary the lives of animals and is shown through the different images shown in the two images. The images show where the meat comes from and what it looks like. This documentary really shows the lives of the animals and really shows that the animals go through to get to certain points in their lives. This has also documented the animals that are special to certain farmers and how the same animal can be different to different people. This documentary look good in colour and the bright colours work well together to highlight the fact that the images are to do with the outdoors and the colours really show off the difference between the animals and the humans.
In this documentary the lives of people in a town in Germany. In this set the photographer has documented people and their lives in their town. The photographer has kept the background tone very similar to the colour of their clothes. In this documentary the photograph has documented each person but also groups of people that look similar and appear to be relatives. The images all link together well to show a clear set of images documenting the people who live in the village in Germany, the people have been photographed and it give a slight hint as to the kind of people that they are. This documentary is very different and I might like to create one similar to this documenting the lives of my family.

Henri Cartier-Bresson - Artist Research
Henri Cartier-Bresson was a French photographer considered the master of candid photography, and an early user of 35 mm film.
Born - 22 August 1908
Died - 3 August 2004
Henri Cartier-Bresson created the idea of the decisive moment. This suggests that the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organisation of form which gives that event its proper expression.
Henri Cartier-Bresson created Photo Documentaries of many different things.

I like this photo because the people are completely unaware that the photo is being taken and I really like that style of as I feel like it gives the photo a more natural feel to it as it is not posed or forced. I like this photo because it displays the decisive moment as if the photo had been taken a moment. I like even though the key decisive moment is in the front there is also one going on in the back because if the picture had been taken any later the car and the bike wouldn't be in the background.
I like this photo because of the depth shown in the photo and the decisive moment is clear. I like this decisive moment is very meaningful as the children appear to be looking at a very interesting thing and the leading line in the middle makes you look all the way to the centre of the photograph not only looking at the shape of the swirl but also all of the children making up the swirl. I like this decisive moment because children are very hard to photograph and if it had been taken a second later some of the children may not have been looking at the camera and then the photo wouldn't have worked at all.
I like this photo because it shows a clear decisive moment because any later and the person wouldn't have been crossing the bridge, the moon man not have been visible and the boat may not have been in the right place. This photo works well because it not only shows a decisive moment but because it also shows movement through the boat and the person on the bridge.
I like all the photos however they are not the types of photos which I would take I like photo that are a part of a set and I don't feel like these all fit together even though they all show a decisive moment. I also prefer photographs that are in colour and the fact that these are in black and white may be the reason for why I don't like them.
